Heavy, uneven yarns run through the weave and leave ridges and raised slub across the surface, so there is real topography in the cloth from the start. That texture is what the fades eventually follow. Wear it and the denim begins softening in stages, loosening first at the elbows, the cuffs, and the collar fold while the indigo pulls back from every high point in the weave. Rope dyeing leaves each yarn with a white core, and at this weight the breaking-in exposes those cores quickly, which is where the high contrast, the deep creasing, and the pronounced texture of a well-worn jacket all come from.
