The appeal starts with the weight. At 22oz, this Japanese selvedge arrives dense and rigid, and the first few weeks ask something of you before they give anything back. Heavy, uneven yarns run through the weave and leave ridges and raised slub across the surface, so there is real topography in the cloth from the start. That texture is what the fades eventually follow. Stay with the denim and it begins softening in stages, loosening at the knees and the seat while the indigo pulls back from every high point in the weave. Rope dyeing leaves each yarn with a white core, and at this weight the breaking-in exposes those cores quickly, which is where the high contrast, the deep creasing, and the pronounced texture of a well-worn pair all come from.
