These have a drawstring, so the waist is going to read smaller. Expect an extra 3-5" of total circumference allowance. 

Fit Notes: Shop owner Tommy is wearing a large in these. He tends to go medium in the shorts and large in the pants. We love the extra room going up once provides from he knee to ankle. If you prefer a more tailored fit, you should likely stick with your true size. Tommy is 5'10," 165lbs with between a 32-33" waist.
