SJAS24-ARW - Cotton Ripstop "Kokiran" Military Shirt - Natural Indigo x Indigo

The "kokiran" military shirt is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, blending tradition and durability in a design steeped in history. Made from high-gauge cotton ripstop fabric, the shirt uses yarns dyed with a unique mix of synthetic and natural indigo to achieve the rich, deep-blue hue of "kokiran." This color, beloved by the common people since the Heian period (794–1180), is brought to life through a modern process that echoes the ancient blend of indigo and the yellow dye "kihada," resulting in a tone both timeless and striking.

The fabric itself is a standout—an original ripstop dyed at the thread stage, thicker and stiffer than ordinary ripstop, with an uneven texture that feels rugged yet refined. Built to endure years of wear, the material's durability is matched by the shirt's impeccable construction. By recreating vintage sewing techniques from a time before efficient two-needle machines, the design showcases authentic details like unique puckering along the seams, a hallmark of its handcrafted heritage. A variance of +/-.5 is within tolerance. 

Fit Notes: In general, Samurai tops fit a bit small, so we decided to size up once in this to an XL. This was the right call as you can see the chest measurement is only 22.25 in this piece. It gave Tommy that oversized look he wanted to match the fit. We would recommend sizing up at least once in this piece.  Tommy is 5'10,' 165lbs with a 40" chest. His North American size is M and his Japanese size is L.
