The Awa Shoai process, developed in the Edo period, relies on a time-intensive fermentation method that draws out a complex range of blues from deep sapphire to soft sky tones, while the kakishibu-dyed slub weft threads add warm earthy contrast and a subtle, uneven texture. Together they create a fabric that shifts with the light, where the interplay of blue and brown reads almost like an old kimono or work jacket pulled from storage. At 15oz and rinsed to remove shrinkage, the denim has a substantial, reassuring hand without feeling overbuilt, and will reward long-term wear with layered, nuanced fades instead of loud, high-contrast streaks. Fit Notes: These fit like a traditional pair of Studio D'artisan, which is smaller than most brands. Tommy is wearing a 34, which is his normal size. These fit absolutely spot on. The Regular Straight has plenty of room in the leg without being overly roomy, so it's most important to get the waist right. We would recommend sizing up at least once in this denim. Tommy is 5'9," 162lbs with a 33-34" waist.
