Lot 2205 - 1920's WW1 Style US Navy 13 Stars Melton Wool Pea Coat - Navy

The early peacoat, crafted during World War I, is acclaimed for possessing the most exquisite design among the Navy's uniforms. Originating in the late 1800s, it is credited to the creation of the U.S. Navy's original pea coat, inspired by British counterparts. Distinguished by four pockets (with waist pockets discontinued in the 1930s), an extended length, 10 buttons, and 13-star and anchor design buttons, it stands out from subsequent models. Noteworthy for its superior stitching, the peacoat is characterized by pervasive tailoring techniques and custom-made specifications, suggesting its intended use for officers and other dignitaries.

This particular style of pea coat remained in use from around 1910 until the 1930s, symbolizing the disciplined ethos of the U.S. Navy with its elegant aesthetics. However, it underwent simplification later on, primarily due to the surge in naval personnel and alterations in specifications for mass production of "ready-made clothing." We are intensely impressed with the quality and weight of this garment. Warehouse even went as far as outsourcing the production to a factory that specializes in tailoring vs. workwear. It's the closest reproduction we've seen in our 10 years of business.

Fit Notes: We knew these were going to be boxy, as almost all Warehouse military repro jackets are. Tommy tried to start with a 40, but it felt just a little too roomy, so he sized down to the 38 for the photo shoot. This was a super solid size overall with just a little tightness in the pit area. He would likely purchase the 40, but if you don't like boxy cuts you may want to snag the size down. Use the size charts for this one, as always. Tommy is 5'10," 165lbs with a 40" chest.
