2015-15 - Hickory Stripe Sumi Black Chore Jacket - Charcoal

Hickory stripe was never subtle. Woven from indigo and natural yarns into a narrow, high-contrast stripe, it marked railroad crews and engineers from a distance, which was half the point. Full Count keeps that weave and then quiets it all the way down, garment dyeing the finished jacket with pigment in charcoal black so the color sits over the stripe rather than through it. What is left reads as a shadow stripe, visible when the light catches it and gone again when it moves. Pigment holds to the surface of the fiber instead of bonding inside it, so it gives way at the creases and the edges as the jacket gets worn, letting a little more of the stripe come back through each season.

The cut runs slightly short with a flared hem, and the detailing stays plain enough to keep the focus on the construction. Aged 5-star donut buttons close the front, the ring-shaped style that has been on workwear since long before anyone collected it. The sewing is the part Full Count will tell you about first: the chain stitching is run at a carefully adjusted tension, which controls how the seams pucker and settle as the jacket is washed and worn, and it is the kind of thing you notice without being able to name it. Made in Japan, and the matching work trousers are cut from the same cloth if you want to run it as a set.
