3S48.99 - Loopwheeled Classic Fit Heavyweight Sweatshirt - Deep Black

A loopwheel machine knits roughly one meter of fabric an hour, and that single number explains most of what makes this sweatshirt what it is. The cloth feeds through under almost no tension, so the yarn is never pulled taut as it is knit, and what comes off the machine is a dense, round tube with a softness and a resistance to pilling that faster knitting cannot produce. Very few of these machines are still running anywhere, most of them built before the war, and Merz b. Schwanen keeps a set of them turning in Germany, which is where this sweatshirt is knit. The fabric is a 3-thread loopback fleece in organic cotton, landing at 14.8oz per square yard, or 420g per square meter, so it has real heft and body in the hand while the soft loops on the reverse keep it friendly against the skin. The construction sticks close to the old pattern. A ribbon-paneled neck finishes the collar, triangular inserts sit at the neckline and under the arms to open up room to move, a woven halfmoon insert runs across the back, side seams shape the body, and a durable ribbed waistband anchors all that weight at the hem. The fabric is all natural and fully recyclable at the end of its long life.

Fit Notes: Tommy is back to wearing his standard XL from Merz on this piece. These loopwheeled crewnecks are always a bit tighter than the chunkier goods. They're meant to be worn a little closer to the body. So we would recommend sizing up at least once in this piece. He is 5'9," 160lbs, with a 41" chest.
