4632 - 17oz "Amami Dorozome" Sashiko Coverall - Brown

Mud and wood chips make an unlikely recipe for color, but on Amami Oshima, a chain of islands north of Okinawa, they have been turning cloth into something remarkable for generations. The process is called Dorozome, and it begins with Sharinbai, chipped from the Japanese hawthorn and boiled down into a dye bath once reserved for the silk of the island's kimono. Each piece is soaked in that bath, then worked by hand through the island's iron-rich mud, where the iron and the tannins react and push the color deeper with every round. It is slow, repetitive work, and a small group of Shokunin still carry it on. Studio D'Artisan sends its jackets more than 1,000km to put them in those hands. The 4632 Coverall leaves as an undyed ecru jacket in the brand's original 17oz Japanese sashiko fabric and returns in a complex blend of earthy browns and near blacks, shaped by however many passes through the dye and mud it took to get there. The raised grid of the sashiko weave gives the color plenty of texture to settle into, catching more dye along its ridges and less in its recesses, and since every pass leaves its own subtle variations, no two coveralls come back alike. It has been a while since the Amami Dorozome series last appeared, which makes its return this season well worth the wait. Underneath all that color, the coverall stays true to its work roots with a single chest pocket and double waist pockets, closed up with oversized tagua nut buttons and marked with an SDA original woven label.

Fit Notes: Tommy is wearing a size 42 in this jacket. That's the size he almost always wears in their jackets. This seems to have that standard oversize Coverall look. Tommy could wear either a 40 for a more classic look or 42 for more layering. We recommend sticking with your true size on this one. Tommy is 5'9," 160lbs with a 41" chest.
