Dehen for Dant - N-1 Waxed Deck Jacket - Hardtack, Kodiak

The Dehen for Dant N-1 Waxed Deck Jacket returns in Hardtack and Kodiak, our own take on a tan waxed canvas we fell for last year and barely got to enjoy before it was gone. Rather than chase it, we worked with Dehen to develop our own interpretation, and it came out truly incredible. The finish is monochromatic, with the waxed shell, the mouton and even the canvas zipper pulls all living in the same warm family of tans, which carries the N-1 past vintage reproduction into something sleek, refined and modern. Hardtack takes its name from the dense ship's biscuit sailors lived on for months at sea, a fitting nod for a Navy deck jacket, while Kodiak is a rich, bear-brown mouton with real sheen. They sound like they belong together and look it even more, as if they were meant to be paired all along and we just got there first. It's a Dant exclusive with a custom Dant x Dehen label, in a color pairing that lives outside Dehen's regular lineup and only here.

The N-1 is the warmest jacket we carry, hands down. The body and collar are fully lined in genuine mouton, so a tee underneath is usually all it takes on the most frigid days, and the shearling is soft enough for bare skin with no itchies or scratchies. The 10 oz waxed canvas shell marbles from highs to lows as it creases, the kind of color shift that separates a great waxed garment from a flat one, and it only deepens as it picks up your own wear. Cuffs are 100% worsted wool knit on Dehen's 1940s machines in Portland, and a #10 army green brass zipper hides behind the six-button placket. The Navy first sent the N-1 to sea in WWII to keep deck crews warm on the North Atlantic, and 80-some years later this one is still more than up for the job.

Fit Notes: Our first impression is that Dehen fits with a more American cut (i.e., larger). We've been proven wrong with the past few pieces, though. We would say this brand has one of the truest fits on the market, if that is even a possible standard to meet. Shop owner Tommy is wearing a large in the pictures. He can wear a medium if he so chooses, but for a roomier look, he always goes with a large. We would recommend sticking with your true size on this jacket unless you want a boxy fit. Tommy is 5'9," 160lbs with a 41" chest.
