The folding fan is a Japanese invention, worked out in the Heian period by binding thin slats together at a pivot, and it has carried decoration as much as air ever since. Samurai faces this one with its bonsai-pattern bandana fabric, stretched across a bamboo frame. The tree in the print is the five-needle pine, one of the classic bonsai species and a tree held as auspicious in Japan for centuries, where the pine's refusal to drop its needles through winter made it a symbol of endurance. It is also tied to business prosperity and to good relationships, which makes a fan carrying it a reasonable thing to hand someone. The fabric is cut at random from the bandana yardage, so every fan takes a different piece of the pattern. Placement cannot be requested, and the one you receive may differ from the photographs. It stands 23cm, or about 9 inches, folded.
