The Fifth Sun Wool Blanket - Gold, Maroon

$ 419.00

Aztec cosmology counted four worlds before this one, each governed by a god, each destroyed in its turn by jaguars, by wind, by fire, by flood. The fifth required a sacrifice to begin. The gods gathered at Teotihuacan, built a bonfire that burned for four days, and chose two of their own to leap into it: Tecciztecatl, wealthy and proud, and Nanahuatzin, poor and sick and named for the sores that covered him. Tecciztecatl was called first and approached the pyre four times, and four times his nerve failed him in the heat. Nanahuatzin rose, closed his eyes, and walked straight into the center of the flames. Shamed, Tecciztecatl followed him in. Two suns rose over a world that could not survive both, so one of the gods took a rabbit and hurled it into Tecciztecatl's face, dimming him into the moon, where the rabbit's shape can still be read.

Björn Atldax renders that gathering in wool for the Fifth Sun Blanket, the latest chapter in his ongoing Deity Project with Indigofera, with the sun's radiant face on one panel and the rabbit-marked moon on the other, surrounded by the figures that carry the story. Indigofera has every blanket woven in central Norway by a family-owned mill that has been making wool goods for more than 80 years and keeps the whole process in-house, from spinning and dyeing the yarn through to weaving the finished piece. At 205 by 150cm of Norwegian wool, it is sized for a couch, a truck bed, or a cold night far from either.
